A year ago, Hapinoy together with its partners—Qualcomm Wireless Reach, Smart Money, and MasterCard—launched the Hapinoy Mobile Money Hub Program. The project aimed to equip women micro-entrepreneurs such as the friendly Nanay (mother) sari-sari store (neighborhood retail store) owner with mobile technology in order to offer various financial services to the community she serves. This effectively provides the Nanays with additional income while extending vital services, such as money remittance, to even the most far flung areas.
The project concentrated on Laguna in Northern Luzon and the province Leyte in Visayas. Leyte was a particularly interesting location for the project as it was one of the provinces greatly affected by Typhoon Hiayan in 2013. So this year, Qualcomm Wireless Reach visited the Nanays in Leyte to see what they have been up to since becoming Mobile Money Agents.
Since the launch these Hapinoy Nanays and Mobile Money Hubs have made a difference in the lives of the communities they are in especially the ones near the hospital and the relocation sites. Because of their reliable and fast remittance services, they have become go-to centers in their own neighborhoods. They also sell airtime load to their consumer and both services prove to be vital during emergencies, especially in the day-to-day lives of domestic migrant workers and students away from their families.
The Nanays love Mobile Money Hub Program because it allowed them to become more techie, and to learn how to operate the smart phone a piece of technology that they once feared and avoided. They also shared how their stores have grown because of the new business and the foot traffic it brings to their stores.
This is just the first step for Hapinoy and Qualcomm Wireless Reach. Hapinoy is now synthesizing its efforts towards a “business-in-a-phone” micro-franchise that will enable more and more Nanays become a Mobile Money Hub Agent. We hope to replicate these stories of hope and development across the nation. Our basic drive in Hapinoy is that a Nanay with a phone means a community with a future.
