If you list things that are common to all Filipinos, Sari-Sari Stores will definitely be on the list. Look at every nook and cranny in the country and you will find small stores that provide almost every basic commodity the community needs.
With the changing times and the advent of different technologies, which definitely challenges the way of life, the Sari-Sari Stores are trying to go with the flow. But question is; can they keep up? Will they strive?
Well yes, fortunately they can.
Hapinoy is born of the aspiration to help the small and medium enterprises in the country, specifically Sari-Sari Stores. It aims to empower these micro-entrepreneurs and enable them to sustain their businesses. With that being said, what could be greater than seeing Hapinoy Agents speak of their success stories as Sari-Sari Store owners?
In the recently concluded Cards and Payments Philippines 2016, Mark Ruiz, Co-founder and President of Hapinoy, along with three store ambassadors, showcased Hapinoy and Hapinoy BizMo! by sharing their own stories of empowerment and success.
In his presentation, Mark emphasized that Sari-Sari Stores have long been part of the Filipino culture. And looking at the reality, they are vulnerable to the harsh competition with relatively bigger stores, which use innovations to aid their businesses. “If Sari-Sari Stores don’t evolve, they will be left behind.” He then stressed that it is possible to apply the same technologies and innovations that larger companies use to these Sari-Sari Stores. This was supported by the inspiring stories of Tito Alex Silvano, Tita Mayreen Artes and Tita Belen Jimenez, Sari-Sari store owners who started using modern technology in their daily operation through Hapinoy Bizmo!.
Hapinoy BizMo! is a program of Hapinoy that enables owners to offer services more than what is expected from a typical Sari-Sari Store. Using a smartphone and Hapinoy BizMo! App, they can provide services like Smart Padala, Airtime Loading and Microinsurance with just few clicks.
“Proud kami na microinsurance agent [na din] kami. Nakakatulong kami sa community…Bakit lumilipat sa amin ang mga tao, sa Hapinoy Store ang mga tao, kasi sabi nila mas mabilis ang proseso”, shared Tita Belen to the crowd.
And who would have thought that a Sari-Sari Store can sell gadgets and appliances?
“Hindi lang pala de lata, sugar, o biscuits ang pwedeng bilhin sa akin. Kung kailangan nila ng gadgets, pwede nilang bilhin sa akin.” Tito Alex proudly said. He is one of the Hapinoy BizMo! agents that subscribe to HapiShop, an online shop for gadgets and appliances.
Tito Alex, Tita Belen and Tita Mayreen all started with small capital. With their hard work and determination to grow their store, they took the chance to level up. Hapinoy BizMo! opened an opportunity for them to expand through online services.
“Masaya ako na naging part ako ng Hapinoy. Sa bago po nilang BizMo App, naipakita sa amin ang mabilis na proseso. Nagtataka na ang mga friends ko bakit naglevel-up na ako”, said Tita Mayreen as she shared her story.
Experiencing empowerment through series of trainings organized by Hapinoy, the Hapinoy BizMo! agents get to help the community and inspire other people with their stories. Now, Hapinoy aspires to reach more Sari-Sari stores and encourage them to be one of the successful Hapinoy BizMo Agents.
The Cards and Payment Conference is an annual event that welcomes leaders and heads of the largest banks, payment providers, e-commerce merchants and retailers among others. On its second year, Hapinoy was invited to share its story of touching the lives Sari-Sari Store owners and creating change in the way they do business.
